Heritage & Leadlight Window Cleaning in Melbourne

Leadlight panels are among the most easily damaged windows in a period home, and among the most commonly cleaned incorrectly. Sash & Polish works exclusively with heritage homes across Melbourne's inner-east, and leadlight window cleaning is the work that requires the most care we do. We assess condition before we start, use ammonia-free solutions throughout, and adjust our approach based on what we find.

What this service covers

Heritage and leadlight scope

  • Full assessment of leadlight panel condition (lead came, putty line, glass integrity) before cleaning begins
  • Ammonia-free solution applied at appropriate pressure for original glass and lead came
  • Cleaning of sash frames, timber surrounds and sill edges where leadlight is part of a larger window unit
  • Attention to coloured glass sections, which vary in thickness and fragility across Victorian, Edwardian and Federation panels
  • Interior and exterior cleaning where access allows
  • Honest assessment of any sections that require a glazier rather than a cleaner, reported before work proceeds

What to expect

  1. Get in touch and tell us about the windows

Leadlight panels vary considerably (age, condition, size, orientation, whether they face morning or afternoon sun). The more detail you can give us, the more accurate our quote will be. A photo helps if you're unsure how to describe what you have.

  2. We assess before we quote

For leadlight, we prefer to see the panels before confirming a price. If that's not practical, we quote on the information provided and flag any adjustments when we arrive, before we start, not after.

  3. Booking confirmed in writing

Date, scope and any specific notes about the panels are confirmed in writing before we arrive.

  4. The job

We work systematically, panel by panel, frame by frame. If we find anything that changes the scope (a section of came that needs attention, putty that requires care around water), we stop and let you know. When we leave, the panels are clean, the frames are dry and nothing has been done that can't be undone.

Why leadlight requires a different approach

The lead came (the metal channel that holds each glass section in place) is more vulnerable than the glass itself. Most commercial window cleaners contain ammonia. On a modern window that's not a problem. On an original leadlight panel, it corrodes the came over time.

Original glass from the Victorian and Edwardian eras was hand-poured. It has slight variations in thickness and surface texture that aren't imperfections. They're part of what makes the window what it is. Cleaning methods that work on modern float glass can cause problems on glass this age.

Putty condition matters before any water reaches the panel. If the putty around the came is cracked or receding, water tracks behind the glass during cleaning. We check it before we start.

Sash & Polish provides heritage and leadlight window cleaning across the suburbs above. These six suburbs hold the highest concentration of Heritage Overlay-listed properties in Victoria, and the highest density of leadlight panels still in their original setting. If you're outside this area, it's worth a call, but we won't take work we can't do properly.

Common questions about heritage and leadlight cleaning

Can any window cleaner clean leadlight safely?

Not with standard products. The ammonia in most commercial window cleaners corrodes lead came over time. The damage is cumulative and not always visible until it's significant. Leadlight requires ammonia-free solutions, lower pressure and a cleaner who knows to check the putty condition before applying any water to the panel. If you're unsure what products your current cleaner uses, it's worth asking.

What does lead came damage look like?

Early-stage came damage can look like a dull or pitted surface on the lead channel. It loses its slight sheen and may begin to flake. In more advanced cases the came becomes brittle and sections may bow or lift away from the glass. This is structural damage and requires a glazier, not a cleaner. We'll tell you if we see signs of it before we begin.

Can you clean leadlight that has hard water staining on it?

Yes, but we assess the staining separately from the panel cleaning. Hard water stains on leadlight glass need to be treated with solutions that are safe for both the glass and the surrounding came, which rules out most commercial stain removers. Whether the staining is fully reversible depends on how long it's been there and how deeply it's etched. We'll give you an honest answer after looking at it.

My leadlight is in a front door, not a window. Do you clean those?

Yes. Door panels, fanlights, sidelights and internal partition panels are all within scope. Access and the scale of the panel affect how we approach it, so include the door panel in your description when you get in touch.

How often should leadlight panels be cleaned?

For most homes in this area, twice a year (once in spring, once before Christmas) is appropriate. Panels that face a heavily trafficked street or receive significant morning condensation may benefit from a third visit. We'll tell you what we observe on the first job and recommend accordingly.

Tell us about your leadlight panels.

Every leadlight job starts with a conversation about the panels (age, condition, access, any concerns you already have). Fill in the form and we'll come back to you with the right questions and an honest quote.
